Sea Grant Expert to be at March 14 DNR Trap Net Hearing

MEDIA ADVISORY

WHAT: Wisconsin Sea Grant Fisheries Advisory Specialist Phil Moy will available at a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) hearing on the use and location of commercial fishermen’s trap nets. For 10 years, Moy has worked with commercial fishermen on education and alert systems for recreational boaters and fishermen.

WHEN: 5 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2011

WHERE: University Theatre, University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan, 1 University Dr.

BACKGROUND:  In late spring and into the fall, commercial fishing trap nets are set off Two Rivers/Manitowoc and Sheboygan, and in Door County. The nets are designed to catch whitefish and allow other non-target species to be released unharmed. During each fishing season, Wisconsin Sea Grant provides maps of net locations in Two Rivers/Manitowoc and Door County to local bait shops. The maps are also posted online and are available at boat landings. Recreational fishermen and boaters need to be aware of the nets’ placement to avoid being tangled.

The Wisconsin DNR is conducting the March 14 hearing on possible revisions to the use and marking of commercial fishing trap nets.
