Several Marshfield High School students from the winning team for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl leave for Hawaii this coming weekend to learn more about the ocean firsthand. The team won the national competition in May, which involved rapid-fire buzzer questions and conducting a mock ocean science policy briefing. Marshfield High School has had a four-year winning streak.
“While the winning team can choose an exciting trip to an exotic locale, the trips have a strong science focus, which the students love,” said Kathleen Meehan Coop, director of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.
Three members of the five-person team and their coach leave July 22 for the weeklong Hawaii trip. They will be spending three days in Honolulu where they will tour the Waikiki Aquarium, snorkel, paddle outrigger canoes and tour the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology on Coconut Island (as seen in the opening sequence of the television show, “Gilligan’s Island”). Then they will fly to Kailua Kona where they will dive with manta rays, visit a robotics facility and visit the Mauna Loa volcano.
Milwaukee will host the national ocean bowl competition in April 2013.
Wisconsin Sea Grant supports the Lake Sturgeon Bowl—the Wisconsin state competition, which is hosted by UW-Milwaukee. The effort is part of Sea Grant’s mission to advance aquatic science literacy.
