Clean Marina Program to Boaters: Don’t Dunk Your Antifreeze

Spring is rapidly approaching—a development that turns the thoughts of the recreational boater to de-winterizing the fleet. But even though it might seem like common sense to avoid, every year, hundreds of boaters dispose of the antifreeze that protected their motors during winter’s coldest months by dumping it into Wisconsin’s lakes, rivers and harbors. Or, just as bad, into storm sewers, where it drains back into the waterways.

The Wisconsin Clean Marina Program, a statewide effort organized and steered by UW Sea Grant outreach specialist Vicky Harris, has created an easy-to-use tip sheet that  details the proper collection, disposal and recycling procedures for boat antifreeze. You can find it at www.wisconsincleanmarina.org. You can also listen to a UW Sea Grant-voiced public service announcement about antifreeze disposal here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DreGoojJ21s

Remember, even if you’re using propylene ethyl (the safer pink- or blue-colored type of antifreeze) it’s still a dangerous, toxic substance that can contribute to fish kills.
