Standing along the Lake Mendota shoreline on July 29, 2015, Kelly Tyrrell, university relations specialist in University Communications, interviews Luke Loken, a graduate student in the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, about a device known as Fast Limnological Automated Measurement (FLAM). When mounted to the stern of a boat, this sensor is used to collect real-time water-sample data as the boat travels around the lake. Loken and other researchers have further adapted the acronym to nickname the activity “to FLAMe” or “FLAMing” the lake. (Photo by Jeff Miller/UW-Madison)
