Body
Mouth and Snout: Mouth subterminal without any teeth. No barbels. Chisel-like cartilaginous ridge on lower jaw. No frenum connecting snout with fleshy upper lip. Body Pattern: Gray, brownish, or olive with small to medium dark blotches and mottling, sometimes coalescing into an irregular lateral stripe, grading to tan, cream, or yellowish white on belly. Fins generaly clear, but dark stripes on dorsal and anal fins in adults. Cycloid scales. Body Shape: Fusiform and robust, a fat oval in cross-section. Ventral area somewhat dorso-ventrally flattened. Typical adult size is 75-150 mm TL (3-6 in), with a maximum of about 225 mm (9 in).

Forked tail. Single dorsal fin with 8 rays and no spines. Pelvic fins abdominal. No adipose fin. Anal fin with 7 rays and no spines.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Chisel-like cartilaginous ridge on lower jaw. 8 dorsal rays. No barbels. 47-58 lateral line scales and 38-50 scale rows around body (sum of these two counts usually 87-102). See also similar species information.
Breeding Adults
Males with conspicuous tubercles on head and most scales; fins and body orange, gold, and/or dark yellow with dark stripes on anal and dorsal fins. Distinct "hump" developes behind head.
