Mouth and Snout: Mouth inferior without any teeth. Small, but conspicuous barbels at the corners of the mouth. Thin flexhy lips, no frenum connection snout to upper lip. Body Pattern: Sides light tan or silvery with numerous black pepper-like spots. White belly. Fins clear. Body Shape: Fusiform, with the ventral area somewhat dorso-ventrally flattened. Typical adult size is 35-65 mm TL (1.5-2.5 in), with a maximum of about 75 mm (3 in).
Forked tail. Single dorsal fin with 8 rays and no spines. Pelvic fins abdominal. No adipose fin. Anal fin with 7 rays and no spines.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Pepper-like black spots on light-colored body. Small but conspicuous barbels at corners of the inferior mouth (barbel length about equal to the diameter of pupil of eye). 36-40 cycloid lateral line scales. About 28 scale rows around body. See also similar species information.
Breeding Adults
Fine tubercles on head, anterior scales of body including breast, and pectoral and pelvic fins.
