Ecosystems & Habitats

Coastal areas provide essential habitat for numerous species of fish, waterfowl, migratory birds and mammals. But the continuing development of our coastlines has destroyed much of our wetlands, degraded water quality and severely stressed ecosystems. Understanding the complex dynamics between terrestrial and aquatic environments is critical to resource quality, sustainability and management in the Great Lakes region.

EPA provides video of the Great Lakes Dune conference.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency Video Streaming Portal provides video of the the Great Lakes Dune Conference held October 3-4 in Traverse City, Michigan. The goal of the first ever Great Lakes Dune Conference was to establish a Great Lakes Sand Dune Ecosystem Coalition to bring together all persons, both in the U.S. and Canada, currently involved in sand dune related research, education efforts, management, monitoring and other activities, in an effort to share information and increase the awareness of this unique ecosystem.   read more...

Save the Date!  Lake Michigan: State of the Lake 2009 and Great Lakes Beach Association Conference
September 29-October 1, 200, Milwaukee, WI
The 6th biennial State of Lake Michigan and 9th annual Great Lakes Beach Association Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency, located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee.  This joint conference brings together Lake Michigan stakeholders, elected officials, scientists, resource managers, planners, students, and interested citizens working to improve and protect Lake Michigan and Great Lakes beaches.

Vicky has been with the UW Sea Grant program since 1999. From her office on the UW-Green Bay campus, she serves the area around Green Bay, Lake Michigan, including Brown, Oconto, Marinette and Door counties. Vicky’s initiatives focus on contaminated sediment remediation of the Fox River and Green Bay, sustainable community development, nonpoint-source pollution prevention in the Fox-Wolf and Green Bay watersheds, coastal habitat protection and restoration, and ecosystem responses to water quality improvements. She holds B.S. and M.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
