What kind of manuscripts interest Wisconsin Sea Grant?
Our primary interest is in communicating the results of UW Sea Grant-funded research, but we are open to anything Great Lakes-related for a wide range of audiences:
  • technical reports for researchers and resource managers,

  • advisory reports for Great Lakes-related businesses and other resource users,

  • educational publications for teachers and students, and

  • general information for the public and media.

If your research is producing new information that would benefit any of these audiences, please contact us! We can work with you to prepare news releases, fact sheets, newspaper articles, reports, books and other publications.

However, our researchers are encouraged to first seek publication of project results in the professional science journals of their field. The Communications Office can help you with preparing materials about your Sea Grant research for journal publication, professional papers and conference presentations when such assistance is unavailable from your department.

I'm a Sea Grant-funded researcher. How can Communications help me?
First, read the Publications Policy for information about journal page charges and reprint costs. Second, keep the Communications office informed of major developments in your research or other events or circumstances that would make a publication or news release appropriate (for example, current media interest in the declining yellow perch population).

Your work has the most value to the research community and to society when it's used, so it's important to disseminate research results as widely as possible. The purpose of the Communications Office is to help you do that. Keep in mind that Sea Grant is supported with taxpayer dollars. It is important to communicate the value and usefulness of Sea Grant research whenever possible to ensure continued public support of the program -- and your research.

How do I contact Communications with an manuscript idea?
Please contact our editor, Elizabeth White, at (608) 262-6393, email eawhite@seagrant.wisc.edu; or Assistant Director for Communications Stephen Wittman at (608) 263-5371, email swittman@seagrant.wisc.edu

How should I format my manuscript for submission?
Manuscripts should be submitted on disk with one printed paper copy. Microsoft Word (for Windows or Macintosh) is preferred, but we may be able to accommodate other software. Ideally all illustrations would be EPS graphics, but, again, we may be able to accommodate other types of files.

Please format the manuscript as simply as possible; it will be redesigned for publication, and formatting codes can cause problems if the document must be translated into different software. Include page numbers on each page.

What does the manuscript evaluation process include?
All manuscripts are subject to peer review and the approval of UW Sea Grant's assistant director for communications. Revisions may be requested based upon reviews, and all manuscripts will be edited for accuracy, style, clarity, and grammar.
