1994-96 Program Directory Wins National Honors

UW Sea Grant Institute's 1994-96 Program Directory has been awarded a bronze medal by the Council for the Advancement & Support of Education (CASE) in connection with CASE's annual nationwide university communications projects competition.

The UW Sea Grant entry was one of only 11 entries to be awarded a medal (three gold, four silver and four bronze) out of 211 entries in the Individual In-House Publications category of CASE's 1995 contest.

Congratulations goes out to the communications team who wrote, designed and produced the directory: art director Tina Yao, writer Larry Wiland and publications editor Phil Davis.

Wittman Named Assistant Director

UW Sea Grant's Stephen Wittman has been promoted to Assistant Director for Communications. He formerly served as Communications Coordinator.

"By means of this action I am now formally recognizing the broadened scope for the Communications Subprogram to a position parallel in stature to the research, advisory services and education sections of the Institute," said UW Sea Grant Institute Director Anders W. Andren.

"We have taken this step out of recognition of our program needs and Stephen's talents and professional growth with the Sea Grant Institute over the last 16 years," Andren added.

Wittman started his career at UW Sea Grant in 1979 as Publications Editor. He became a Senior Editor in 1987, and was named Communications Coordinator in 1990. In addition, he was a Regional Communications Representative of Great Lakes Sea Grant Network in 1992-93, and he recently completed a two-year term as chair of the National Sea Grant Communicators Steering Committee.

Water Quality Specialist Joins Advisory Services Staff

Kevin Fermanich has joined UW Sea Grant Advisory Services as its new Water Quality Specialist. His office is located in the UW Center-Manitowoc County. Fermanich's expertise adds depth to UW Sea Grant's education and outreach activities.

"Water quality is a new focus for us," Assistant Director for Advisory Services Allen H. Miller said. "It's necessary because of the water quality problems in the Great Lakes. New federal legislation is placing a heavy emphasis on non-point sources of water pollution in coastal watersheds."

"There are so many water quality programs out there that it's confusing to the average citizen," Miller said. "Kevin's role is to help people understand these programs and their role in them."

A Wisconsin native, Fermanich earned a B.S. in soil science and resource management from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. With an M.S. and Ph.D in soil science from the UW-Madison, he has experience as both a researcher and teacher in the areas of hydrology, soil science, water quality and resource management.

Fermanich's address is 705 Viebahn Street, Room E105, Manitowoc, WI 54220-6699; phone (414) 683-4697, fax (414) 683-4776 and email kfermani@uwcmail.uwc.edu. Please welcome him aboard.
