Wisconsin Sea Grant's "Madison-Area JASON IX" Web site (Mary Lou Reeb, project coordinator; Tina Yao, designer; other credits) received a Gold Medal Award in the World Wide Web Sites category of the annual "Circle of Excellence" nationwide university Almuni Relations and Communications competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE, 1998). The Great Lakes Information Network named the entire University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute's Web site (credits) as the GLIN Site of the Month for August 1997. Wisconsin Sea Grant's "Madison-Area JASON '97" Web site (Mary Lou Reeb, project coordinator; Tina Yao, designer; other credits) received a Gold Medal Award in the World Wide Web Sites category of the annual "Circle of Excellence" nationwide university Almuni Relations and Communications competition sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE, 1997). This site also received a Gold Award in the 1997 Design Competition of the University & College Designers Association, one of only 12 golds awarded out of more than 1,200 design entries nationwide (UCDA, 1997). Wisconsin Sea Grant's "Madison-Area JASON '96" Web site (Mary Lou Reeb, producer; Stephen Wittman, editor, and Tina Yao, designer) received a Gold Medal Award in the World Wide Web Sites category of CASE's "Circle of Excellence" university communications competition (1996). The site was also awarded a 1997 Addy by the Madison Advertising Federation in the Interactive Online category. In addition, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign selected Madison-Area JASON '96 as one of its "Top Five Sites of the Day" on March 4, 1996. Wisconsin Sea Grant's aboriginal 1995 home page (designed by Tina Yao) and our national Sea Grant Network (created by Stephen Wittman) pages both were named Magellen 4-Star Sites -- the highest rating an Internet site can achieve in Magellen, The McKinley Group's comprehensive online directory of more than 1.5 million reviewed and rated Internet sites. (1995) Littoral Drift, UW Sea Grant's bimonthly newsletter, received an Award of Excellence in the Apex 2000 national publications competition conducted by Communications Concepts, Inc. (2000) UW Sea Grant's 1994-96 Program Directory (Laurence Wiland, writer, and Tina Yao, designer) won a Bronze Medal Award in the Individual In-House Publications category of the national Council for Advancement and Support of Education's "Circle of Excellence" university communications competition. (1995) The Fisheries of the Great Lakes / University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute 1984-86 Biennial Report (Stephen Wittman and Peyton Smith, editors, and Christine Kohler, designer) was awarded two Silver Medal Awards, in the Special Program Publications and Research Publications categories, in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's "Imagination" university communications competition. It also received a First Place Award for Outstanding Writing in the Publications category and a Honorable Mention for Visual Design in a University of Wisconsin System Communications Contest. (1987)

(1987) Wisconsin Sea Grant's 1984-86 biennial report, The Fisheries of the Great Lakes (Christine Kohler, designer), received Honorable Mention for Visual Appeal/Individual Pieces for Booklets and Books in the University of Wisconsin System Communicators Contest. (1987) "Tune in on the Earth" (Christine Kohler, designer), a poster promoting Wisconsin Sea Grant's Earthwatch Radio program, received a Honorable Mention Award for Visual Appeal/Individual Pieces in the University of Wisconsin System Communicators Contest. (1987) A series of "fish balloons" featuring drawings of Great Lakes fish and attached information cards (Christine Kohler, designer) won a Special Merit Award for Visual Design/Specialty Pieces from the national Council for Advancement and Support of Education (1983) and was selected for display in the University of Wisconsin Graphic Design Exhibit (1984). Earthwatch Radio (Steve Pomplun and Richard Hoops, current producers; Linda Weimer, Jean Lang, Peyton Smith and Tom Sinclair, former producers, 1974-present) — a weekly series of five 2-minute science and environmental news features coproduced by the UW Sea Grant Institute and the UW-Madison Institute for Environmental Studies — has won 10 major awards since it first went on the airwaves in 1972, including:
PUBLIC, COMMUNITY & MEDIA RELATIONS The Sea Grant National Issues Forum "Can America Save Its Fisheries?" project (principal investigators: Nancy Blanton, Washington Sea Grant; Kathy Hart, North Carolina Sea Grant, and Stephen Wittman, Wisconsin Sea Grant) won an Apex Award of Excellence in media relations and publicity from Communications Concepts. (1996) Wisconsin Sea Grant's "Zebra Mussel Watch Project" (principal investigators: Clifford Kraft, Allen Miller and Stephen Wittman) received a Gold Medal Award in the Individual Community Relations Projects category of the nationwide "Focus on Excellence" university communications competition by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. (1991) Wisconsin Sea Grant's "Lake Levels Update" and related outreach and public information efforts (Philip Keillor, Allen Miller and Peyton Smith, principal investigators) during the 1985-86 period of high lake levels and accelerated coastal erosion won it a Silver Medal Award for Public Relations from CASE. (1987).
"The Greatest Lakes" (Bob Lovely, producer, WHA-TV), a half-hour television documentary on the international effort to manage and restore Great Lakes fisheries and water quality first aired on the Public Broadcasting System in 1984, was awarded:

(1987) Two fact sheets in UW Sea Grant's Advisory Services Pennants series ("How to Use Fill Material in Stabilizing Shoreline Bluffs or Banks" by Philip Keillor and "Great Lakes Charter Boat Fishing" by Lynn Frederick, both edited by Stephen Wittman) received Honorable Mention Award for Specialty/Creative Writing in the University of Wisconsin System Communicators Contest. (1987) "High Water Threatens Great Lakes Shores" news release (writer: Peyton Smith) won a Third Place Award for Best News Story in a statewide University Relations Communicators Contest. (1985)
