Revered for centuries by many northern cultures, swans often were considered supernatural and capable of magical powers. Despite this history, the Trumpeter Swan—the largest of all North American waterfowl—was hunted to near extinction by the early 20th century. With the help of protection and recovery programs, however, this magnificent bird has been making a comeback.
