Snow Bunting — Water Connection

While not water birds in the usual sense, Snow Buntings are well adapted to a different form of water—snow!

• In order for Snow Buntings to withstand frigid northern temperatures, they can burrow under the snow to stay warm.

• Snow buntings frequently bathe in both fluffy and hard-crusted snow, rubbing their plumage vigorously against the snow.

• A Snow Bunting’s white wings helps the bird blend in with its snowy habitat, providing effective camouflage against predators.
