Double-crested Cormorant Water Connection, page 3

Cormorants launch into flight by means of two-footed hops across the water. Most other waterbirds run across the water when they take off.

Double-crested Cormorant nests often are exposed to direct sun. Adults shade the chicks and also bring them water, pouring it from their mouths into those of the chicks.
