Belted Kingfisher — Conservation Status

Human activity, such as building roads and digging gravel pits, has allowed the expansion of breeding range for the Belted Kingfisher by providing steep banks where the bird can nest. However, other human activity such as waterfront development that damages fish populations or eliminates nesting grounds has hurt the bird. Some recent surveys indicate that the North American population of Belted Kingfishers is declining by about one percent per year.
