Common Merganser Great Lakes Habitat

Common Mergansers breed along forest-edged waterways wherever there are cool, clear, unpolluted lakes and rivers. Fish is the staple of their diet, though they are opportunistic feeders and will take whatever happens to be available, including insects, mollusks, crustaceans, worms, frogs, small mammals, birds and plants. Common Mergansers prefer nesting in tree cavities, but will also nest on the ground in areas with good fishing but an absence of suitable trees.
