Common Loon – Water Connection, page 4

• When the sun’s rays reflect in a sparkled pattern off the surface of a lake, the black-and-white specked coloring on a loon’s back provides camouflage from above, where predators like eagles may be looking for a meal. From under water, a predator like a muskellunge or snapping turtle may not see a loon’s creamy white chest and belly, similar in coloring to the sky above the water.
