Weight: 3.5-12 lbs.

Color: A breeding adult loon sports a black head, neck, wings and sides, with a white ring around the neck, white stripes below the throat and on the sides of its chest, and white checkered markings on its back. Its chest is white and eyes are red. Males and females show similar plumage, and both sexes have a long, thick dagger-like bill that is black in the breeding season and gray the rest of the year.
