Beach Safety

Here are a few recommendations to make a day at the beach safe and enjoyable.

  • Take sunscreen, sun glasses and a wide-brimmed hat for protection from harmful UV rays.  A long-sleeved shirt or other cover-up may also be a good addition to your gear.
  • Bring plenty of water to prevent dehydration if you're unsure of the availability of water at the shore
  • Swim only in areas designated for swimming, and preferably those that have lifeguards present
  • Never swim alone; always use the buddy system
  • Check the weather and wave conditions before you go, if possible, and be alert for changing conditions.
  • Don't dive in areas not marked for such activity.  The water and waves can hide underwater rocks and other hazards
  • If the areas is unfamiliar, be sure to read any posted information or warnings, especially about hazards such as rip currents or about health warnings and closures
