Anti-Zebra Mussel Techniques Testing

From August 8, 1990 (update #3)

Susan Fisher, an aquatic toxicologist at The Ohio State University, has established laboratory and field facilities to test various products for their capability to prevent zebra mussel fouling. This service is not free: Interested individuals will be charged for the costs of testing their products. With start-up funds from Ohio Sea Grant, Fisher has set up lab facilities on the OSU campus in Columbus for conducting toxicity tests and testing chemical controls, anti-fouling paints, anti-attachment substances and mechanical devices. She also has established facilities at OSU's Stone Laboratory, located on the shores of Lake Erie near Sandusky, for field testing paints and anti- fouling substrates, and is conducting toxicity tests on nontarget organisms. For more information, contact Susan Fisher, Department of Entomology, The Ohio State University, Rm. 103, Botany & Zoology Bldg., 1735 Neil Ave., Columbus, OH 43210, phone (614) 292-2133.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
