Zebra Mussel Sightings in Wisconsin

From August 8, 1990 (update #3)

STURGEON BAY - A search of the nearshore bottom of Sturgeon Bay, Lake Michigan, July 20 by a scuba diver failed to turn up any zebra mussels in the bay itself, but several of the small mussels were later found in the sea chest of the U.S. Coast Guard vessel Mariposa undergoing maintenance at Bay Shipbuilding. The daylong search was conducted by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources diver Tim Rasman and Wisconsin Sea Grant Zebra Mussel Watch assistant coordinator Jory Jonas. The Mariposa's home port is Detroit, on the zebra-infested waters of Lake St. Clair.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
