Editor's Note

From August 8, 1990 (update #3)

Since our last update (June 28), no veligers have been found in 85 water samples collected from municipal and industrial water intakes and 138 plankton samples collected from harbors along Wisconsin's Lakes Michigan and Superior shorelines. No settled zebra mussels were found in 150 substrate samples examined during the same period. To date, the only zebra mussel sighting in Wisconsin waters of Lakes Michigan and Superior was a single adult in Kenosha harbor and a small number of adult mussels found last fall on buoys from Superior-Duluth harbor.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
