EPRI Mussel Group Meets in Milwaukee
From October 26, 1990 (update #5)
The Zebra Mussel Advisory Group of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) met Oct. 3 in Milwaukee to review the status of zebra mussel infestation in Great Lakes utilities and to receive an update on zebra mussel research being conducted under EPRI sponsorship. Utility representatives from Ohio, New York, Ontario and Indiana reported finding zebra mussels on intake walls, screens and in assorted water systems, and they discussed the effectiveness of various methods of treatment. Wisconsin Sea Grant Advisory Services Coordinator Allen H. Miller, principal investigator of the Wisconsin Zebra Mussel Watch project and an invited participant, observed that EPRI has initiated "good, sound applied research on controls that will be of benefit not only the power industry, but other industries and municipal water intakes.".

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
