* Thirty-five presentations on the results of the 1990 field season and recent laboratory research will be featured at the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network's zebra mussel conference Dec. 5-7 at the Holiday Inn on the Lane in Columbus. Ohio Sea Grant district specialist Fred Snyder, a conference organizing committee member, said the presentations will cover zebra mussel biology, ecology, control alternatives, economic effects and monitoring. The registration fee will be $90 in advance and also includes a banquet dinner, lunch and two continental breakfasts. Polish scientist A. Stanczykowska, who has conducted extensive studies of zebra mussels in European lakes, will present the keynote address. * A Macrofouling Symposium, sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), will be held Dec. 4-6 in Orlando, Fla., and zebra mussels will be a key topic. For more information, contact Bruce Lube, EPRI, phone (704) 547-6080.

* "Zebra Mussels - Mitigation Options for Industries" is the title of a conference sponsored by Ontario Hydro to be held Feb. 11-12 in Toronto, Ont. The conference will feature recent research and developments of techniques and systems designed to help industrial water users cope with the zebra mussel invasion. Presentations will include summaries of recent research results, industrial water user case studies and exhibits of products aimed at zebra mussel monitoring and mitigation. The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
