Possible Effects on Walleye Spawning

From October 26, 1990 (update #5)

The potential for zebra mussels to reduce walleye reproduction in western Lake Erie by encrusting walleye spawning beds has been a subject of repeated speculation. But preliminary research results indicate such concerns may be unwarrented. Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources biologist Joe Leach has conducted several investigations related to walleye spawning this year. He was quoted in the Sept. 21 issue of Science as saying, "After this summer's work, we came out feeling kind of good: The walleye spawned, eggs hatched OK, and we have a good year-class of walleyes.".

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
