Editor's Note
From October 26, 1990 (update #5)
Since our last update (Sept. 17), no zebra mussel veligers were found in 44 water column samples from Wisconsin harbors along Lakes Michigan and Superior. No veligers were found in 58 samples from Wisconsin Great Lakes municipal and industrial water intakes. Of 57 substrate samplers analyzed for the presence of zebra mussels, only two samplers from Superior harbor contained settled mussels. Water column and water intake sampling for zebra mussel veligers ended for the season on Oct. 12. Substrates will continue to be examined at some locations for a few more weeks.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
