Sea Grant Issues Nationwide Call for Zebra Mussel Research P
roposals
From January 31, 1991 (update #6)
SILVER SPRING, Md. - A nationwide call for zebra mussel-related research proposals has been issued by the National Sea Grant College Program. The NSGCP has received a special $1.5 million appropriation earmarked for research on the biofouling mollusc. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will participate in this research effort and may fund relevant proposals directly or in cooperation with Sea Grant. "This special funding represents a unique opportunity to address a pressing and potentially immense problem confronting the nation as well as the Great Lakes region," Wisconsin Sea Grant Director Anders W. Andren commented. "I strongly encourage all interested scientists to consider participating in this important national effort." The deadline for submitting proposals is March 8. Applicants will be notified by mid-June 1991 as to whether their projects will be funded. Priority research topics have been identified in a interagency ad hoc committee report, "Coordinated Program of Research for Exotic Species in the Great Lakes." High priority will be given to proposals that focus on the zebra mussel issue but have application to nonindigenous species policy and management in general. The NSGCP is particularly interested in proposals that focus on environmentally sound methods of controlling and preventing the spread of zebra mussels. Multidisciplinary research, joint research with concerned industries and government agencies, and cooperative projects among state Sea Grant programs are encouraged. Multiyear projects are acceptable. Copies of the call for proposals, research priorities report and guidelines for submitting proposals are available from state Sea Grant programs nationwide. Investigators in states without a Sea Grant program should contact the National Sea Grant College Program directly. For more information, contact your state Sea Grant program or Dr. Bernard Griswold, National Sea Grant College Program, 1335 East-West Highway, Silver Spring, MD 20910; phone (301) 427-2431; fax (301) 427-2799.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
