New Monitoring Programs Proposed

From April 30, 1991 (update #7)

Several proposed zebra mussel monitoring programs have come to our attention. They include:

* Inland river system monitoring by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Likely river systems to be monitored for settled mussels include the Upper Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois and Susquehanna rivers. Contact: Bob Peoples, phone (703) 358-1718.

* Inland river system monitoring by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Contact: Drew Miller, phone (601) 634-3111.

* Illinois-Indiana waters of Lake Michigan by the Illinois Natural History Survey. Both plankton and substrate samplers will be used to assess distribution and abundance of zebra mussels. Samples from water intakes will also be examined for a fee. Contact: Ellen Marsden, phone (708) 872- 8677.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
