Illinois EPA Orders Zebras to Landfills

From April 30, 1991 (update #7)

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has announced that any zebra mussels removed from a water intake or discharge pipe must be "disposed of in a landfill in order to protect the ecology of our lakes and streams," according to information received from that agency. Permit information is available from the Illinois EPA Permit Section, phone (217) 782-1696.

ID: 19910430-8.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
