Mussel Love Turning Colder?
?
From April 30, 1991 (update #7)
SOMERSET, N.Y. - Zebra mussel veligers were found in late April at densities of 28 per cubic yard (36 per cubic meter) at temperatures of 46 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) in the intake of the Lake Ontario Somerset Generating Station operated by New York State Electric & Gas. This suggests that reproduction may have occurred earlier in the year and/or at temperatures lower than previously reported. European literature suggests that the mussels normally don't reproduce in water temperatures below 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius).

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
