Canada Begins Monitoring on Lake Superior

From September 10, 1991 (update #10)

TORONTO, Ont. -- The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) has set up 20 monitoring stations in Thunder Bay and at other sites along Canada's Lake Superior shore. During an August interview, OMNR Zebra Mussel Coordinator Chris Brousseau told the Plymouth (Wis.) Review, "I think the writing is on the wall. It's not a matter of 'if' (zebra mussels) will hit Ontario, but 'when'.".

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
