Mussels Found on Boat Hulls
From October 11, 1991 (update #11)
With the arrival of autumn, boats removed from Lake Michigan at Wisconsin marinas showed the first signs of the zebra mussel infestation. Some examples included:
* The unpainted rudder of a fiberglass sailboat from the Chicago area, hauled out of the water at the Manitowoc Marina, was found covered with zebra mussels. * A powerboat from northern Indiana waters of Lake Michigan, hauled out at Palmer Johnson Marine in Sturgeon Bay, had zebra mussels attached to the trim tab hydraulic cylinders. * A single mussel was found attached to the hull of a boat docked at Eagle's Nest Marina in southern Green Bay.
ID: 19911011-4.
The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
