Office Buried by Barry Column on Size Z Bra Mussels
From February 19, 1992 (update #12)
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Wisconsin Sea Grant Zebra Mussel Watch personnel always appreciate receiving clippings of newspaper stories about zebra mussels, but the bushel of clippings of the same story on zebra mussels by nationally syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry in early January was a bit much. "It seems anyone who knows I have something to do with zebra mussels sent me a copy," watch coordinator Clifford Kraft said. Barry made much sport of clippings sent to him by readers of a Watertown (N.Y.) Daily Times news report headlined, "Large Colony of Zebra Mussels Found Clinging to Big Brassiere." "I had hoped that we could get the new year under way without any reports of ecologically dangerous shellfish attacking women's undergarments," Barry quipped. Etc., etc. If you would like to read the entire column, contact Kraft - he's got lots of extra copies.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
