New Sighting in Wisconsin

From February 19, 1992 (update #12)

GENOA - A single zebra mussel attached to a Mississippi River lock structure was found Jan. 16 by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) employees during a maintenance inspection of Lock & Dam #8 near here. This discovery came just two days after three mussels were found by COE personnel during a maintenance inspection of Lock & Dam #18 at Oquawka, Ill., 260 miles downstream of Genoa. The Genoa sighting is only the second report of zebra mussels in Wisconsin waters of the Upper Mississippi since a single adult mussel was found Sept. 12 at La Crosse, Wis., about 20 miles upstream.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
