MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. - Free-swimming zebra mussel larvae (veligers) were found in water samples taken May 20 at a power plant water intake near here, according to Nan Trudeau of the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS). Trudeau said these were the first veligers found in southern waters of Lake Michigan this season by INHS personnel, who began collecting water samples in early May. The water temperature on the date of collection was 59 F (15 C), though the water temperature had been warmer the previous week.
ESCANABA, Mich. - A single zebra mussel was found in mid-March inside a condenser water box at the Escanaba Generating Station during a routine maintenance inspection, according to plant superintendent Kirby Juntila. On April 27, another solitary mussel was found in a condenser water box. Chlorine treatments of plant water systems are planned in the near future, Juntila said.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
