Map Mistake Puts Mussels in Lake Winnebago

From June 5, 1992 (update #13)

Contrary to the information in a widely distributed map prepared by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources last December, no zebra mussels have been found in Wisconsin's Lake Winnebago. Subsequent versions of this map have been corrected. UW Sea Grant will continue monitoring for mussels this summer in this productive lake. Four municipal water utilities draw water from Lake Winnebago, which is upstream from numerous paper mill water intakes along the lower Fox River.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
