College Offers Zebra Mussel Control Course

A course on the control of zebra mussel infestations will be offered Oct. 20-23 by the Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in southwestern Ontario. The course is designed for professionals involved in the engineering, operation or management of municipal or industrial water supplies and/or power generation. Course leaders include Gabriel Timar, chair of Civil/Resources Engineering Technology at Seneca College, and Renata Claudi, senior scientist with the Environmental Protection Department at Ontario Hydro. The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
