August Heralds Statewide Public Information Campaign
From July 28, 1992 (update #14)
MADISON - Wisconsin residents will be hearing about zebra mussels throughout the month of August as part of a statewide radio and television public awareness campaign by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute. The campaign consists of 15- and 30-second audio public service announcements (PSAs) sent to 188 Wisconsin radio stations, and 10- and 30- second video PSAs sent to all 37 television stations in the state. Prime-time broadcasts of the 30-second PSAs on most Wisconsin radio and television stations was ensured through a contract with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. "We selected August as the critical month for this campaign because it was the peak month of zebra mussel reproduction last year in Wisconsin waters of Lake Michigan," UW Sea Grant Communications Coordinator Stephen Wittman said. Produced with support from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Bureau of Water Resources Management, the 30-second television PSA is aimed specifically at boaters and focuses on the steps that should be taken to prevent transporting mussel larvae and adults on trailerable boats. The PSAs are narrated by Dan Small, host of the popular "Outdoor Wisconsin" program produced by Milwaukee Public & Educational Television.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
