Zebra Mussel Watch Cards Near Million Mark

From July 28, 1992 (update #14)

MADISON - More than 628,000 wallet-size "Zebra Mussel Watch" cards have been printed in the last 18 months, and orders for more continue to arrive almost weekly, according to University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Publications Production Coordinator Christine Kohler. Besides the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network, Kohler said orders for customized versions of the cards have come from private firms as well as state and federal government agencies as far away as Colorado, Vermont, Tennessee and Ontario, including a version in Canadian French. "At this rate, I expect we'll top the one million mark by the end of the year," she said. "We're already making arrangements to print more than a half- million cards for our Department of Natural Resources to enclose with its boat registration mailings." The cards feature life-size full-color photos of zebra mussels with text that tells how to identify them and what to do if you find one. A "generic" version of the card is available for 5 cents per card; customized cards may be ordered at the same per-unit price with a minimum order of 7,200 cards. The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
