Wisconsin Requires Permit to Import Zebra Mussels
From July 28, 1992 (update #14)
GREEN BAY - Wisconsin already has law on the books that, in effect, prohibits the introduction of zebra mussels and penalties for doing so. The law, NR 19.05 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code, states: "It shall be unlawful for any person, persons, firm or corporation to bring into the state to introduce or release or cause to be introduced or released in any manner into the inland or outlying waters, forests or fields of this state any variety or species of wild animal, hybrid or a wild animal, and any bird or fish or the eggs or spawn thereof, without first applying for in writing and receiving a written permit from the department or its duly authorized agents." According to Green Bay Marine Unit Warden Roger Hansen, persons caught introducing zebra mussels into a new body of water in Wisconsin could be fined $190 - assuming, of course, they didn't get a permit from the state first...

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
