
International Zebra Mussel Conference: Call for Papers

MADISON -- Organizers of the Fourth International Zebra Mussel Conference have announced a call for papers. The four-day conference will highlight current research on the biology and impact of zebra mussels, and on control options and systems developed to cope with mussel infestations. Presentations on other related nuisance aquatic organisms are also invited. Prospective authors should submit a one-page abstract on the following areas: Mitigation Strategies and Case Studies, Chemical Control Options, Transport, Biological Control, Physical Control, Biology of Zebra Mussels, Population Dynamics, Ecological Impacts, Other Aquatic Exotics, Rivers and Reservoirs, and Monitoring and Assessment. ABSTRACTS ARE DUE BY NOVEMBER 1. Papers can be given as either a verbal or poster presentation. They must include: (1) title (15 words or less), (2) author's affiliations, addresses and phone numbers, and (3) presentation type preference (paper, poster, or either). Abstracts should be sent to: Abstracts, 1994 Zebra Mussel Conference, UW Sea Grant Institute, 1800 University Ave, Madison, WI 53705-4094. All abstracts will be reviewed. Authors will be notified by early December whether their presentation has been accepted.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
