Boating Restrictions Implemented

From September 16, 1993 (Update #18)

ST. CROIX FALLS -- Efforts to keep zebra mussels from infesting the St. Croix River National Scenic Riverway continued throughout the summer. Poor weather conditions in July and a no-wake restriction for the Lower St. Croix significantly reduced boater activity. A boat cleaning station on the river has not yet been established. To date, diver surveys of 27 monitoring sites have turned up no mussels in the Riverway. Passive monitoring devices on the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers have not revealed zebra mussels.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
