Musseling the Ball

From March 7, 1994 (update #20)

FISH CREEK - First we had the zebra-mussel encrusted Camaro. Then an en- crusted brassiere and shopping cart. Now there's a zebra mussel golf ball! Green Bay diver Greg Hughes retrieved a mussel-covered golf ball in early December in the waters of Green Bay. However, it's unlikely the ball landed there due to an errant drive. In mid-September, a Green Bay dive club had a "golf ball" hunt in these waters. The divers apparently missed this ball during the hunt. Hughes found it two months later covered with zebra mussels. No word yet whether the mussels qualify for a "finders" prize.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
