Michigan Inland Lake Monitoring Planned
From June, 1994 (update #21)
As part of a program funded by Michigan Sea Grant and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, plankton samples from 45 Michigan lakes will be examined this summer for zebra mussel veligers. Program coordinator Paul Marangelo will train volunteers at an additional 12 lakes to collect plankton samples for analysis. Additional inland lake monitoring will take place this fall. Marangelo is looking for volunteers from inland lake associations willing to inspect boats removed from the lakes. Last summer, researchers discovered veligers in 10 lakes. Since it is not known whether mussel populations have become established in most of those lakes, follow-up observations will be conducted. Lake associations interested in volunteering can contact Marangelo at (313) 994-3331, ext. 297.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
