Mussel Surcharge

From January, 1995 (update #23)

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati City Council has imposed a four percent water rate increase to cover anticipated costs for controlling zebra mussels, according to Bruce Kraus, a biologist with the Cincinnati Water Works Water Quality Department. Although zebra mussel infestations have not yet caused water supply problems, Kraus said that June diving inspections showed that the utility's two Ohio River intakes were heavily infested with zebra mussels. The rate hike was implemented in anticipation of potential problems.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
