Exotic Learning
From October, 1995 (Update #25)
Starting in November 1995, the Zebra Mussel Traveling Trunk developed by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and the Illinois Rivers Project will be available to provide teachers with new and interesting ways to teach about exotic species. Developed by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and the Illinois Rivers Project, the touring science trunk features hands-on demonstrations, experiments, games and stories that enable students to learn about zebra mussels and their effect on the environment. An introduction to other nonindigenous species is also part of the program. Although the Zebra Mussel Traveling Trunk was developed for a fifth/sixth grade level, activities can easily be modified for younger or older students. The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
