
6th International Zebra Mussel Conference Set
From October, 1995 (Update #25)
Michigan Sea Grant will host the 6th International Zebra Mussel and Other Aquatic Nuisance Species Conference March 5-7, 1996, in Dearborn, Mich. Speakers will discuss the latest field studies and case histories relevant to utilities, industry, agriculture, municipal water treatment facilities, the tourism industry, federal government agencies, and others who rely on waterways that are presently, or at risk of becoming, infested. Conference sponsors thus far include the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Canadian Coast Guard, and Detroit Edison, each of which has contributed at least $5,000. The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
