Double Duty

From May, 1997 (Update #30)

In Illinois, volunteers are monitoring inland lakes for adult zebra mussels. "This year, we plan to have 100% of our volunteers monitoring for zebra mussels," said Rex Buhrmester, statewide coordinator of the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. "All volunteers will be educated about the zebra mussel and its potential impacts. As they survey the perimeter of their lake looking for adult zebra mussels or zebra mussel shells, they'll be able to share their information with other lake users. In this way, the volunteers can do double duty, serving as both monitors and educators." In 1996, 156 lakes in Illinois had volunteer monitors.

The Zebra Mussel Update was a 4- to 8-page quarterly national newsletter published by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute from May 1990 through May 1997. The ZMU documented the spread of the zebra mussel -- an exotic nuisance mussel -- through North America's freshwater environments, especially the Great Lakes, and on efforts to control it.
